On Tuesday, Speaker of the New York State Assembly Carl Heastie joined Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara at ViaPort in Rotterdam to announce more funding for the three-pool aquatic center planned for the revived mall.

Heastie and Santabarbara came together for what Santabarbara’s office called “a significant step towards the forthcoming Capital Region Aquatic Center.” The tour was also attended by Capital Region Aquatic Center Board President Kara Haraden and Schenectady County Legislators Gary Hughes, and Richard Ruzzo.

An additional $2.5 million in capital funding from Santabarbara’s office, was unveiled for the construction of the new aquatic facility, which supplements the $2.5 million funding provided by his office in 2022, bringing the State Assembly’s total investment to $5 million. In addition, another $105,000 will now also be allocated from Santabarbara to provide “Learn to Swim” initiatives in partnership with the Schenectady City School District. The program is intended to impart essential swimming skills to more than 700 second-grade students, potentially saving lives in the process.
